Novartis made Zelnorm available again in 2007, but voluntarily discontinued it in 2008. Doctors have prescribed antidepressants in patients with irritable bowel syndrome because it can block pain receptors to the bowl area. Celexa and Paxil are two antidepressants prescribed most often for IBS patients with constipation.

Celexa and Paxil manufactures warn that antidepressants can cause an increase risk of suicide in young adults. These drugs also cannot be taken with MAOI's and may increase the risk of bleeding events. Elderly patients, or those taking any diuretics are at greater risk of developing hyponatremia, which can result in swelling of the brain.
