Amitiza IBS Medication

The Benefits of Amitiza IBS Medication.

Amitiza is first FDA approved drug from Sucampo Pharmaceuticals, Inc. This company was founded in 1996 and focuses on prostones for the treatment of disorders, such as irritable bowel syndrome. Prostones are bio-lipids, which are natural components in our bodies. The FDA approved Amitiza (lubiprostone) in 1998 to treat constipation in adults. Amitiza also treats adult women with IBS whose primary symptom is constipation. Irritable bowel syndrome can cause debilitating pain for those who experience constipation. Amitiza works by increasing fluid secretion in the small intestines, allowing stools to pass through more easily. The FDA has approved Amitiza for all adult women, including those 65 and older. Amitiza has also demonstrated its effectiveness as a long-term medication for use beyond 12 weeks.

Amitiza is the only FDA approved drug to treat IBS with constipation. Sucampo Pharmaceuticals is currently working on a form of Amitiza for constipation for pediatric patients, and those with other gastrointestinal disorders. Sucampo Pharmaceuticals is working on another product called Cobiprostone, which would help gastrointestinal, liver, pulmonary, and dermatological problems. Product SPI-017 would help treat peripheral artery and vascular disease along with Alzheimer's disease. Novartis' drug Zelnorm, another irritable bowel syndrome medication, was pulled off the market after evidence that it raised the risk of heart attacks and strokes. Novartis made Zelnorm available again in 2007, but voluntarily discontinued it in 2008. Doctors have prescribed antidepressants in patients with irritable bowel syndrome because it can block pain receptors to the bowl area. Celexa and Paxil are two antidepressants prescribed most often for IBS patients with constipation.

Celexa and Paxil manufactures warn that antidepressants can cause an increase risk of suicide in young adults. These drugs also cannot be taken with MAOI's and may increase the risk of bleeding events. Elderly patients, or those taking any diuretics are at greater risk of developing hyponatremia, which can result in swelling of the brain. Women who suffer from irritable bowel syndrome can live their lives without pain and constipation. Amitiza can help make their lives regular again. Since Amitiza is the only FDA approved drug for IBS with constipation, it wouldn't hurt to ask your doctor about regaining your life without chronic pain and bloating.
