Amitryptyline hydrochloride is made by several different manufacturer's worldwide. It is produced in name brand forms, such as Elavil, Tofranil, and Vivactil. Elavil was first produced by Merck and Company under patent. The patent has since expired and other drug companies now produce Amitryptyline in generic and brand forms. Elavil is actually no longer produced by Merck and Company since the patent has expired. Mylan Pharmaceuticals, Sandoz, Mutual Pharmaceuticals and Pliva are all pharmaceutical companies that produce generic forms of Amitryptyline hydrochloride. Amitryptyline is a tricyclic antidepressant, and is used for a wide range of medical disorders. Amitryptyline is put into use to treat bulimia nervosa, the prevention of migraine headaches, to treat several types of mental illnesses and other sleep disorders. This medication is very effective when used correctly in the treatment and prevention of a wide range of diseases and illnesses. It can take several weeks once you begin taking Amitryptyline to experience the effects of this drug. Doctors recommend not skipping a dose, even if you may feel that you do not need them or they are not effecting you. Amitryptyline hydrochloride should not be taken under several different circumstances. You should not take Amitryptyline if you are taking MAO inhibitors, or if you are recovering from a heart attack. Children under 12 years old should not take Amitryptyline, as antidepressants used by children under 12 can cause suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Amitryptyline should not be taken with antihistamines, seizure medications and other forms of antidepressant medications. Pregnant women should also not take Amitryptyline as usage in pregnant women has not been thoroughly studied, and it is known that Amitryptyline is passed through breast milk.
