Consumer Demand - Impramine/Tofranil is an antidepressant. It is used in the treatment of childhood bedwetting up to the age of six, panic disorder, chronic pain, attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder and bulimia nervosa.
Miscellaneous Information - Impramine/Tofranil should not be used if you have recently had a heart attack or are taking thyroid medication. If you are bipolar this medication can cause you to have a manic episode. If you are schizophrenic it can cause a psychotic episode.
There are many side effects that are associated with this medication. They include, but are not limited to blurred vision, changes in apetite and weight, constipation, difficulty breathing or swallowing, drowsiness, difficulty in urinating, excitability, sweating, fever, inability to sit still, irregular heartbeat, jaw, neck, back and muscle spasms, nightmares, tremors, severe skin rash, slow/difficult speech, upset stomach, weakness and yellowing skin.
It is very important to let your physician know about all drugs that you may be taking. This is a partial list of drugs that if taken at the same time as Impramine Tofranil can have an adverse effect: tranquilizers, thyroid medications, albuterol, antidepresssants that act on seratonin, cimetidine, mao inhibitors, phenytoin, quinidine, propafenone, norepinephrine, barbiturates, flecanide, carbemazapine, decongestants, drugs that control spasms, guanethidine and methylphenidate.
It is extremely important to tell your physician if you become pregnant while on this medication. There is very little information about possible effects to a fetus. Physicians may decide to continue the medication if the benefits to the patient out weigh the potential and unknown risks to the unborn child. It is not known if the drug is passed on through breast milk.
Abrupt dicontinuance of medication can cause nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. It is important to reduce the dose gradually if the choice is to discontinue use.
