Irritable Bowel Syndrome Medication
Irritable bowel syndrome, or IBS, can become quite a disruptive issue for many and often require irritable bowel syndrome medication to help alleviate many of the symptoms of IBS that occur. There are many different types of medications for IBS and we will discuss this here.
As for more intense symptoms associated with diarrhea or IBS-D conditions, there are a lot of irritable bowel syndrome medications that are used to help treat these symptoms such as those which affect the neurotransmitters that cause the many intestinal contractions.
5-HTS medications target certain receptors in the digestive system, slowing contracting. These 5-HTS include Kytril, Remeron, Zofran and alosetron (Lotronex) which is highly regulated and only used when the other IBS medications have not worked.
Other irritable bowel syndrome medications that affect neurotransmitter activity by slowing intestinal contractions include anticholinergics such as Buscopan (aka butyl scopolamine), Bentyl (aka dicyclomine) and Levbid (aka hyoscyamine).
In addition to the aforementioned, there are many antidepressants used in the treatment of IBS including common SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) such as Prozac, Celexa and Lexapro, as well as tricyclic antidepressants (Norpramin and Elavil).
In contrast to the diarrheal symptoms of IBS, the constipation (IBS-C) side of IBS symptoms can be treated much differently.
First, antidepressants are not considered as treatments for IBS-C irritable bowel syndrome medication.
There is one major irritable bowel syndrome medication for IBS-C and that is Amitiza which is considered as a chloride channel activator. This IBS medication simply provides the body’s ability to produce more liquids in the intestinal system.
Other irritable bowel syndrome medication options for IBS-C include Zelnorm (which is highly regulated due serious potential side-effects) which affects the amount of serotonin neurotransmitters, as well as lacunose which is a sugar that can help produce more water in the intestines through the bacterial breakdown of the sugar in the intestines which requires water to be pulled into the area.
In addition to the aforementioned irritable bowel syndrome medications, there are many products which can be purchased over the counter at your local drug stores such as supplements which can increase the health of one’s digestive system, products for diarrhea such as Imodium as well as supplements such as calcium.
Products such as Metamucil can also help with one’s bowel movements.
There are many irritable bowel syndrome medication options available, but if an individual’s daily lifestyle does not include regular exercise or a healthy diet, their overall health could be affected.
It is important to consider healthy alternatives to fatty or sugary foods in addition to getting proper exercise in order to keep the body functioning properly.
IBS symptoms have also been connected to higher levels of stress, lack of relaxation and/or traumatic events and counseling may indeed help alleviate most of the irritable bowel syndrome symptoms overall.
If symptoms do persist, again, it is indeed very important to see your doctor or medical professional in order to find the best solution for to your individual situation.
