Paroxetine Paxil
The description of Paroxetine Paxil.
Paroxetine, or commonly referred to as Paxil or Seroxat, is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor effecting the neurotransmitters in the brain. The drug is prescribed primarily in patients with disorders such as depression, panic anxiety disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder, post traumatic stress disorder and premenstrual dysphoric disorder. GlaxoSmithKline, being among the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies in operation, released the drug in 1992. The drug was the first antidepressant officially approved in the United States for treatment of panic attacks.
Paroxetine has an effect on the neurotransmitters in the brain, chemicals that nerves use to communicate with each other. Along with the prescribing indications of the drug such as depression and OCD, there are other disorders that the drug has been proven effective against as well. Some studies have shown that paroxetine can be used in the treatment of premature ejaculation. Studies also suggest that the drug is effective against gambling impulses and assists with hot flashes as well.
While GlaxoSmithKline is only responsible for one depression medication of it’s kind, Paxil, there are an abundance of other drugs they manufacture. Some of the other drugs they lay claim to include diet pills, migraine treatment, antibiotics, antacids and nausea medicine, just to name a few.
Some of the major players on the United States SSRI market comparable to paroxetine are Prozac which is manufactured by Eli Lilly, Celexa, manufactured by Forest Laboratories and Zoloft which is produced by Pfizer. Generic manufacturers view paroxetine as a target simply because of it’s world renowned success.
There are a number of things that set Paxil apart from it’s competitors. The main difference is that the drug has been proven to treat more conditions than what it is indicated for. It has also been proven well tolerated in treatment among patients with varying conditions.
